Artist Statement

From across the room one is seduced by shiny feminine forms that appear to be polished marble. The space is filled with female body parts, and one curved torso reminiscent of the Venus De Milo. Upon closer examination, the viewer is forced to abandon the objectification of these objects, as each of these forms is covered in text.

The black torso, titled "10,000 Glances" is covered in 10,000 digital archival inspection stickers.

The red upper torso is also covered meticulously in inspection stickers; these appear to be translucent and wet. The object reminds me of a piece of red meat on a stake. This female chest has transformed into something more like a big red ham, inspiring the title, “100% Grade A Approved”.

On another pedestal are two colorful legs rising straight up, titled "Good Leg, Bad Leg". From afar, the legs appear identical in shape and color. However, the text on one leg is complimentary statements while the other leg is covered in negatives. Perception and judgment is subjective and random, yet so powerful.

The juxtaposition of the lovely female form with this text is an expression of the extreme driving force behind images of beauty. We very often forget that there is a human being inside of there. This series brings a sobering message through the use of seduction and humor.

Allison Massari

“Being female, and being a burn survivor allowed me countless opportunities to be watched, scrutinized and studied. It was so extreme. Out of that pain, came freedom one day. Beauty emerged, love emerged, and compassion flourished. Then came the laughter and the joy.”
